Message from the President

Satoshi Watanabe, President

The science and technology of surfaces, interfaces, and vacuum play a critical role in many aspects of our lives. From information and communication technology to energy efficiency, environmental protection, medical advancements, and even space exploration, these technologies serve as a foundation. They also intersect with a wide range of academic disciplines, including physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and biology.

In our society, researchers and engineers from diverse backgrounds come together to exchange ideas through international conferences, symposiums, and publications. We also organize various activities such as workshops, educational courses, seminars, exhibitions, and certification programs through our committees, divisions, and regional branches. Through these efforts, we aim to advance the science and technology of surfaces and vacuum, fostering talent and promoting the broader dissemination and application of these technologies, ultimately contributing to the betterment of society.

Many of you visiting this page may already appreciate the significance of surface, interface, and vacuum science in your area of interest. However, we recognize that the importance of these foundational technologies may not be fully understood by researchers and professionals in other fields, or by the general public. These technologies hold tremendous potential for achieving breakthroughs in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity today, such as energy, environmental issues, and medical advancements. Promoting these technologies and actively contributing to solving these challenges is a mission that our society takes very seriously. To fulfill this mission, we must deepen our collaboration not only within our society but also with various external sectors. As president, I am keenly aware of this direction and its importance for our society's future.

We have already been expanding our activities to strengthen our external connections, such as signing agreements with overseas academic associations. Moving forward, I believe it is essential to further enhance collaboration with industry, other academic societies, and researchers and engineers across different fields. I deeply appreciate the support and cooperation our members have provided in these endeavors, and I kindly ask for your continued assistance to help our society grow and contribute to the broader community.

For those who are not yet members of our society, I invite you to participate in our academic conferences, international meetings, and foundational courses. With a wide range of researchers and engineers gathered under our umbrella, I am confident that you may find valuable insights to help solve the challenges you face. Furthermore, your challenges may inspire new developments in vacuum and surface science. I look forward to working together with all of you to build a brighter future.
